Nearly 7 million people have been internally displaced by the war in Ukraine. Thousands have died and thousands more have been injured. IOM has already assisted close to 800,000 Ukrainians with basic daily needs, cash support and small business grants. As winter arrives, IOM stands ready to help displaced Ukrainians survive the cold months ahead with increased access to shelter, winter clothing, physical and mental health support. Our winterization efforts rely on your support.
In Somalia, it is not the cold but the unrelenting heat and drought creating one of the largest humanitarian crises on the planet. This drought is unlike the periodic dry seasons of years past. The climate is changing in East Africa, and with it, a lack of rain for more than four consecutive years. As a result, the parched landscape is littered with bodies livestock, an essential food source for pastoral communities. Nearly 8 million people face extreme food shortages, nearly a quarter of those are children. IOM is working to provide shelter, clean water, and access to food, but needs are outpacing the capacity to respond.
